Make
Your Own Book
Sunday, October 5, 2008
Description
You can make a hardback case-bound book much like one was made the 16th
century! You will learn all the necessary book binding techniques, discuss
the influence of books and paper on society in the past, and consider the
place of handmade paper and books in the future—from arcane art, to tools
for “slow thinking,” to collectibles with value. While constructing your
book you will learn to fold and sew pages, attach endpapers and headbands,
make a cover out of cardboard and paper, and finally bind the book together.
This book will be similar to the small leather books Queen Elizabeth used,
but bound in leather-like paper. No special skills are needed and all tools
and materials will be provided. This may be the start of a hobby you can
share when gift-giving. Your book will be a treasury … for original writing,
a journal, collections of poems or recipes, or a diary of sketches or
dreams.
Instructors
Known in the faire as Master and Mistress
Papermaker, Peter and Donna Thomas are authors and illustrators of More
Making Books by Hand. They are book artists: papermakers and letterpress
printers who also illustrate, illuminate, and bind their own unique book.
Their research into the history of papermaking and their exploration of
alternative book structures are internationally recognized. As the
Papermakers, they taught bookbinding and papermaking and sold both blank and
printed books at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire from 1975 to 1989
Occasionally, they have returned since then to sell their blank books and
book earrings. They are founding members of the Miniature Book Society and
throughout their careers have been active in the leadership of both national
and international book arts and papermaking organizations. Since 1977, they
have produced over 125 limited edition books and over 75 one-of-a-kind
artists' books. These books have been shown in over 165 individual and group
exhibitions, both in the
U.S. and abroad. They have lectured and taught workshops internationally,
and have published numerous articles on papermaking and other aspects of the
book arts. They live and work in
Santa Cruz,
California.
